Happy Easter!  Hope your day has been extra wonderful.  We had a great time at the early service at church and then with family for brunch. 

Our meal included some of our Easter favorites:

Mom’s Easter Potatoes.  This year we made them with homemade cream of chicken soup – delicious. 

Roasted Asparagus and Brussels Sprouts with Applewood Smoked Bacon – two yummy spring green side dishes.  Love them both. 

My mom brought some cuties – Jello Deviled Eggs & Bunny Rolls. Festive & yummy!

Some Halloween Cake recipes with GW kitchenware

Wrestling for baking ideas for Halloween? Here are some creepy creations for a spooky soiree.

Moon cake

For this dessert, you can improve your normal cake mix with some extra ingredients.

Distribute prepared cake mix between two 8-inch pans coated with cooking spray. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius and cool for 10 minutes.

Cover the top of the layer with dark chocolate glaze and place the second cake layer on top. Ice the entire cake with two layers.

Chill in refrigerator for 20 minutes and vanilla frosting in the shape of a half moon.

The cookies make by increasing your oven temperature to 180 degrees Celsius. Wrap and chill the dough for 15 minutes.

Role of dough to one-eighth-thickness and cut the bat shapes. Place cookies on a baking sheet coated and cool for 10 minutes. Bake at your pan for 7 to 10 minutes.

Spider Cake

Prepared cake mix about two 8-inch pans to make this simple recipe for a spin chocolate cake, first some distribute.

Put the cake on your pan for 30 to 35 minutes at 350 ° F, then cooling for 10 minutes while still in the pans.

One of the layers of ice with some vanilla frosting, place the second cake layer on top. Then, the whole double-layered ice cream cake and cool in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes.

A spin template, cut it out and place it on your cake. Relate to your image and sprinkle it with black sanding sugar, making sure the good by pressing it down and brushing of extra sugar.

Chocolate pumpkin pie

Prepare your cake pans by heating your oven to 180 degrees Celsius and light Buttering three eight inch tart pans, lining them with baking parchment.

Making the batter by sifting flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and nutmeg in a large bowl and then across.

You can combine buttermilk, pumpkin and vanilla in a medium bowl and set aside. Mix the butter and sugar together in a bowl, preferably with an electric mixer.

Add in your eggs, beating well until mixture is smooth and light.

Bake your cake by dividing the batter among the pans and Bake until a wooden skewer inserted into the Centre, which should come out clean after 35 minutes. Cool cake in pan for 20 minutes.

Remove cake and cool. Then assemble the cake and trim each layers, one layer on a cake plate and topping with a third of the glaze.

Repeat with the second and third layers and refrigerator.

Happy Easter

“He is not here; he is risen, just as he said!”
Matthew 28:6

Easter represents hope, joy and thankfulness all wrapped up into one day.  The holiday follows Passover, and the Bible is clear that on Easter weekend, Jesus became our Passover Lamb.  He took on our sin, carried our cross to Calvary, and was crucified.  But the story doesn’t end there!

Christ rose from the grave. 

And, when He did, He overcame sin and death – for us. 

Why?  Because God loves us that much. 

As we celebrate today, I wanted to share an old hymn with you – the words capture Easter in light of Passover quite beautifully. 

Christ our Redeemer, died on the cross,
Died for the sinner, paid all his due;
Sprinkle your soul with the blood of the Lamb,
And I will pass over you.

When I see the blood, of my Holy One,
My wrath will be quenched, my judgment be through.
When I see the blood, of my only Son,
Yes, I will pass over you.

Chiefest of sinners, Jesus can save.
All He has promised, surely He’ll do.
Wash in the fountain where sinners can bathe.
And, I will pass over you.

Judgment is coming, all will be there.

Not only was Lord Krishna the Divine Advisor to Arjuna and the Pandavas in the epic battle of righteousness versus evil represented by the Kauravas, He - as the incarnation of Lord Vishnu the Preserver - is also the vanquisher of Narakasura. This event from Krishna's holy life is commemorated on 'Chhoti Diwali'.

We can see how Lord Krishna and Sri Rama, both considered avatars (incarnations) of Lord Vishnu are inextricably intertwined in the traditions and foundations of the most important festival of all in the Hindu calendar - the Holy Festival of Deepawali. Both the Hindu Gods are amongst the most respected and most popular Gods in Hinduism. They are worshipped in almost every Hindu home and remembered in times of need as well as trial. 'Hey Ram' and 'Radhe Krishna' are two of the most common phrases one can hear in religious Hindu homes.

Children eagerly look forward to Chhoti Diwali when the flow of gifts to and fro from friends and relatives turns into a torrent since only a day is left for Diwali. Cake Decorating Made Easy with edible ink

If you have become a fan of the cake competition shows, you know how complicated and time consuming making a designer, custom cake. Some come away from watching these shows with the impression that only takes the hour-long show for the production of these cakes, but in reality, many cakes take more than 30 hours to make. When it comes to implementation of designer touches, there are a few exceptions to the rule. A way to the impression that you have spent countless hours decorating a cake is to use a designer or print a photo that was printed with edible ink on a Cherry leaf.

Let's say a mother wanted her daughter wedding cake but knew only some basic cake decorating techniques. She could step up a notch with the help of the daughter wedding stationery as a design inspiration and scanning of the design in the printer. The printer would then spitting a cherry sheet with an edible design. That design can then be applied directly on the sides of the cake, cut into shapes with scissors or a punch or fondant or gum paste decorations which applied to just a hint of the draft in the cake.

You are certainly not limited to scanning. Each photo that is already on your computer or downloaded and download each print you can be sent to the printer. Individual photos can be used to top a cake or integrate in picture frames to decorate the cake.

Account the design skills a step further, you can each design you print out on the icing sheet and run it by an electronic cutting machine. The machine can be used for more difficult designs with small, accurate cuts or to cleanly cut out letters in some fonts. The electronic cutting machine comes with some preset patterns and other cartridges are available, scrolls, to do repetitive patterns that would take forever to cut by hand, numbers, etc.

Even if you want to design your own hand-drawn but have to make multiples of the order to put on the cake, making scanning and printing out as much as you need is so much faster and convenient than individually create them on the cake. You can hand paint a design on paper, scanning and the icing sheet will reveal to change your brush strokes, making it look like you are the hand painted design on the cake.

Empty Tomb Rolls

One tradition for Easter that is really fun is making empty tomb or resurrection rolls.  These use everyday food items to symbolize the true meaning of Easter. 

  • The marshmallows (ideally, use white) represent Jesus – pure white because He lived a sinless life (Hebrews 4:15, 1 Peter 2:22). 
  • The melted butter represents the oil that was used to prepare Jesus’s body after He was crucified, and the cinnamon and sugar mirror the spices (John 19:39-40). 
  • The crescent rolls symbolize the tomb, into which Jesus was placed; sealed tightly after placing in His body (Mark 15:46, Matthew 27:63-66).
  • On Sunday morning when the women returned to Jesus’ tomb, they found the tomb empty, as Jesus had risen from the dead just like He prophesied (Like 24: 1-7). 

Frog Prince and I enjoy making these together and reading the Scriptures, and plan to continue this tradition to enjoy on Easter morning!

Empty Tomb Rolls – Adapted from here

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the whole wheat crescent rolls according to directions found here

Roll out the crescent roll dough into a circle, and then cut into 6-8 wedges. 

Dip the marshmallows in butter. 

Then, roll them in cinnamon and sugar. 

Place the marshmallows onto each crescent dough triangle.  If you use jumbo marshmallows, you will only need 1 marshmallow.  We used up the marshmallows we had, and put 2-3 in each square.  What can I say… we don’t like to waste food. 

Wrap up the marshmallow in the crescent roll dough.  Seal them really tight. 

Dip the dough ball in butter and cinnamon and sugar.

Place the rolls into a muffin tin that has been lightly greased.  We used jumbo tins. 

Bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes until lightly browned. 

Serve warm.

ZEE's RECIPE: Fatet Beithenjan // Yoghurt, Fried bread and Aubergine

If you're looking for a quick recipe to whip up that will impress your guests and taste absolutely delicious, I've got just the one! 

Below is my mum's version of Fatet Beithenjan - a Palestinian dish that has proven to be an ultimate success at every dinner party, lunch, 3azeemeh I have ever been to. 

My mum enjoys preparing this dish during Ramadan because it is a time to get creative in the kitchen, and to spoil us with yummy food without feeling to guilty about the calories. Thank you Mum, for all your hard work, love and absolutely delightful cooking! :) 

Disclaimer: this is really a recipe for occasions because it can be heavy. We usually try to make it healthier by grilling the eggplants, or toasting the bread instead of deep frying it. 

I hope you try it out and enjoy the richness of the flavors :)

Fatet Beithenjan! 


Method:

Eggplants:
4 medium/large eggplants 
Peel the eggplants and slice them into medium slices. Fry the slices in oil on both sides, then drain them and put them in a  pot. Season the eggplan with some salt and pepper to taste. Allow them to boil for 15 minutes and then add 2 tablespoons of pomegranate sweet sour sauce (dibs Ruman). 

Minced Meat Topping:
1 large white onion/ chopped
1/2 kg of minced meat
Fry the onions until tender then add the minced meat. Stir then add cinnamon powder, cumin, pepper and cardamom. Stir until cooked.

Yoghurt Topping:
3 tubs of yoghurt (laban)
4 cloves of garlic 
salt to taste
Put 3 small tubs of yoghurt in a bowl.  Add crushed garlic and salt and mix until fully incorporated.

Bread Base:
Arabic bread (enough to fill bottom of Pyrex dish)
Cut pieces of bread into squares, then fry and drain.

Putting it all together
In a big Pyrex dish place the fried bread to create a bottom later. Layer that with the cooked eggplants, then spread the yoghurt evenly over it. Top it off with the minced meat. 

Garnish with roasted pine seeds and coriander.

CREATIVE: 18 National Flags Made From Food

I came across this very artistically impressive and beautiful post and thought I had to share it with my readers! The best part is that all the flags were made using traditional food from the particular country - India looks good enough to eat! 

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! I'm thinking of coming up with a way to create the Qatari flag with food. Any ideas?
